2K Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Producer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this decision through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a more defined direction.
The president stated that the team is now overhauling the project with a revised approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a comparable move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire message from Ismailer's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”
Given your hard work and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It revealed the necessity for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s positioned to fulfill its promise to our players.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the new Director of the team. After a period of talks, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.
His leadership and background in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years producing and managing some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to continue witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the weeks to follow.
David
Background of the New Leader
The appointee presently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch states. "Face the competition with fresh skills, risks, and tests that shift every session. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, put it on the line, and hope your team can earn top ranking? The decision is up to you."
The game lacks an announced launch window or consoles, but fans can expect further news as creation advances.
