A whistleblower has disclosed a parliamentary probe that the UK abandoned confidential technology allowing the militant group to identify Afghans who worked with international military.

Data Breach Puts Numerous in Danger

Person A, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the information breach were advised to change residences and switch their contact details to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are currently examining the Conservative government's response of a catastrophic breach of confidential data affecting nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to come to Britain to escape the regime.

The Information Breach Happened

A data file with confidential details, comprising identities, addresses and in some cases household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker employed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The incident was discovered in late 2023, when the names of nine people who had requested to move to the UK surfaced on online platforms.

Militant Technology

Many believe there's this misconception that Afghan rulers lack similar capabilities that western nations possess,” she told the committee.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have your phone number, they can trace your precise location. That is what intelligence groups achieved.”

During testimony about whether the Taliban possessed sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They possess all resources.”

Consequences of the Security Lapse

Early investigations provided to the inquiry estimated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and colleagues of people concerned by the leak had been murdered.

A gag order regarding the breach was put in force in August 2023 and prevented all details regarding the matter from media reporting until July 2025.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, Person A and the aid group she collaborated with advised individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they moved where feasible and altered their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, should militant forces acquired such data, would result in them being traced,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower argued that internal investigation performed by a former official had been incorrect to state that the possession of the dataset by the Taliban was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not standing up to the Taliban; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

The source explained terrible violence suffered by concerned people, involving electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“Instances include four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to force relatives to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
