This strategic shift follows major restructuring at the government-backed institute, including the resignation of its former chief executive last month after both staff concerns and government pressure for strategic overhaul.

Rising Online Risks

The new mission comes amid growing concern about the UK's exposure to online disruptions and online threats.

Recent situations have highlighted these risks, including a significant disruption affecting global cloud computing and fresh digital assaults that disrupted production at major factories and logistics systems across various businesses.

Leadership and Oversight

A previous senior officer of the UK's air and space warfare centre will deliver recommendations next month on how the publicly-supported center can best support the extent of national AI objectives in defense, homeland protection and intelligence.

Strategic Realignment

The center's head, a ex-Amazon UK executive, confirmed that nearly eighty separate studies at the 440-staff institute have been closed, spun out or completed because they aren't consistent with the new direction.
