Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still took place around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent representative familiar with the negotiations revealed that an late session of indirect talks started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the deal.

He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Public Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose brother lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were murdered and numerous more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No location appears as home any longer and until each abducted person come back no one will be secure."

"When we see all home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people gathered to express their backing for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist one woman explained: "We need do any agreement required for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the area of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the night arrives, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who places his head on me the entire evening."

"Every second we check the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.
