The new plan, patterned after the stricter approach enacted by Scandinavian policymakers, renders asylum approval temporary, narrows the review procedure and threatens visa bans on states that impede deportations.

Temporary Asylum Approvals

Those receiving refugee status in the UK will only be allowed to reside in the country temporarily, with their situation reassessed every 30 months.

This means people could be repatriated to their home country if it is deemed "safe".

The system follows the practice in Denmark, where asylum seekers get temporary residence documents and must request extensions when they end.

The government claims it has begun supporting people to repatriate to Syria by choice, following the overthrow of the Assad regime.

It will now start exploring mandatory repatriation to the region and other countries where people have not regularly been deported to in recent years.

Protected individuals will also need to be living in the UK for two decades before they can apply for indefinite leave to remain - increased from the current half-decade.

At the same time, the authorities will establish a new "work and study" residence option, and urge asylum recipients to find employment or start studying in order to switch onto this pathway and earn settlement faster.

Solely individuals on this work and study route will be able to sponsor relatives to accompany them in the UK.

Legal System Changes
