No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
