That Grisly Animated Film Conclusion That Haunts Audiences
Out of all the adult-oriented animated films I’ve ever viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the terror-laced ending of the graphically gory as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker developed a dark, somber , often savage universe with several minor , forlorn twinges of hope.
While Unicorn Wars feels like it came from an impulse to push animation even more, the director stated that it was actually a try to convey a universal, multicultural theme about “the mutual source of all wars.”
That idea is expressed via a group of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously based on a famous line of lovable characters.
Maturing in a society built around militarism and the war machine, many of the bears are fixated on exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a sacred text that claims the bears they previously were rulers of the woodland, until these creatures forced them out.
Others did not entirely fallen for the propaganda, and would rather experiment with narcotics and engage sexually in the woods.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these colorful critters have visible genitals and obvious sex drives.
For a certain particularly cruel, cynical bear, the character Bluey, the war against unicorns becomes a route to power — and specifically to authority over his gentler, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
The character behaves aggressively and an apparent psychopath , and as terror overcomes his unit and takes his comrades sequentially, he takes more and more control personally, via progressively bloody, destructive ways.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are experiencing their own terror, as a spreading, harmful creature in their forest.
“In the early stages, it seems like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker said. “However it evolves into a more dramatic and sad movie. And by the end, it’s a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the more playful movies by a legendary animator, that discover a mischievous joy in allowing animated figures curse, engage in violence, or engage sexually.
Afterward it turns into closer to a darker movie from the same creator, with increasingly graphic violence , a noticeable link to genuine tragedy of battle.
Ultimately, it is a complete theatrical horror carnage.
The horror that turns this a Halloween-friendly movie kicks in well before than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore fans of gore, for enthusiasts of extreme cinema who wish to see a film they’ve never viewed until now, and can endure a narrative that pulls no restraint.
Watch it with the lights off free from interruptions, and that ending will burrow into your mind and stay with you.
