The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how parent company Unilever blocked the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the business with his partner, disclosed how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal series showcasing causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Creators versus Parent Company
The recent development escalates the continuing disagreement between the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders maintain that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video how he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated how he plans to create additional frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades with the organization, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
