The Legendary Anime Ends a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly break until April, when the next major arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
