Two Separate Cuba-Headed Relief Sailboats Declared Missing following Leaving Mexico.
A extensive search and rescue effort is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Launched
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than nine total sailors, per a navy statement.
The vessels had been scheduled to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the navy said.
Context of Humanitarian Support to the Nation
Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country struggles through widespread power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," a representative associated with the mission commented.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their embassy officials.
"The group is collaborating completely with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Previous Aid Delivery
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received another boat that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Wider Political Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of initiatives to ship critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.
The United Nations have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Political tensions have increased lately, with statements from different officials underscoring the delicate nature of relations.
In response to certain comments, a senior government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Reports suggest that initial phases of discussions had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the sailboats and guarantee the security of the people on board.
To date, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
