As stated by a high-ranking defense official, the American military executed a fatal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Strikes

This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military buildup.

Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Tactics Amid Scrutiny

The government has faced growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of legal military action.

Although the administration has stated the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical objective. In a recent interview, the senior advisor said the president “aims to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the series of strikes may be linked to a push to remove Venezuela's current leadership.
