Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the hit program coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
